Car Insurance Volvo (Car Insurance). Why is ABS banned in some car races? Why is ABS banned in some car races? There are a couple reasons, but basically some teams have been cheating... Instead of a simple ABS, they actually have a partial traction control system (they are almost the same mechanically, the difference is mainly in the software). When the FIA caught it too many times, they banned the entire system. Because it is not needed. ABS systems are pretty much limited to full lock ups. The defensive driving course I just too stressed that ABS does not work unless the brake is firmly pressed to the floorboard. Also it can be modified as a traction control. Some sanctioning bodies do not allow this and also ban many other things that are used in current productions cars (like fuel injection). Basically car racing used to be a test bed to improve the breed, but many sanctioning bodies have put a halt to allowing the testing of new technology on the race track. ABS is banned in car races because it gives more of a competitive edge and if they fail you're in trouble.. It takes more skill to tune and use the correct amount of brake force vs just slamming on the brakes. If you slam on the brakes in a car without abs the tires will lock up and you hit a wall. Plus racing is based a lot on feel if you use ABS or TCS you basically will not feel out the road coarse and you could be a big threat, if the electronics fail, to other drivers. Volvo . 2004 Toyota Matrix Stall out/Dead battery security feature? 2004 Toyota Matrix Stall out/Dead battery security feature? Hi! I bought a used 2004 Toyota Matrix today. I'm used to driving a 5-speed, so switching to a 6-speed was a little rough for a few minutes, especially with the Reverse gear being on the top left (normally on the lower right). Anyway, I stalled it out on the lot twice (haha, yes, twice), and each time I stalled out, the dealer had to use a jumper to get it to start again. He said this was a security feature, which I've heard of before. However, if I happen to stall out somewhere without his handy little jumper box, how do i disable (or whatever) that security feature and get going again? They told me to call the dealership, but it's closed, and I need to go out tonight. SO, in short, how do I disable the car being dead after I stall out? 2004 Toyota Matrix. Thanks! car insurance. Volvo . How to Remove Road Tar From Aluminum WheelsYour nice shiny new car has gotten road tar on the aluminum wheels and those black spots stand out like a semi-truck at a Mini Cooper convention. What can you do? Well, with the proper cleaners and some elbow grease you can make them look like new again. A citrus-based remover, such as Citrus King Tar and Asphalt Remover, may be a good first choice because of its lesser effects on the environment. There are times, however, when solvent-based removers, such as those products sold in all auto parts stores, are the most effective way to remove road tar from aluminum wheels and other surfaces. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Solvent-based remover Citrus-based remover Soap and water Polymer wax Applicators Step by Step : 1 Apply remover to cool wheels. Allow to sit for a minute or two, but do not allow to evaporate. 2 Wipe road tar spots off of the wheel surfaces with a soft cloth which has been treated with solvent. 3 Wash the wheel with car wash soap and water. Rinse completely and allow to dry. 4 Check for stubborn road tar and reapply cleaner as needed until no spots remain. 5 Wax the wheel well with a good quality polymer car wax, such as Nu Finish, which is sold at auto parts stores and most larger department stores. This step is very important as it will help make cleaning your wheels easier in the future. Tips & Warnings Always keep your wheels waxed. This helps keep dirt and road tar from sticking as well as sealing the salt and other road chemicals out. Road tar removers can soften the surface of your driveway so wash them away as quickly as possible. Do not use more remover than you really need to get the job done as these chemicals are not good for the environment. ResourcesCitrus-based road tar removerSource for bug and tar removers
Volvo . How to Make Aluminum Wheels Look NewHave your aluminum wheels seen better days? A thorough cleaning and polishing job can make them look new. You need to work meticulously--replacing dirty cloths with clean ones and washing your hands between each step. Quick, sloppy work will cause smears and scratches, but a careful job will produce aluminum wheels that shine like mirrors. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Car-washing soap Sheepskin mitt Water Chamois Soft rags grease or crud remover wheel polish cotton swab or skewer soft towelHow to Make Aluminum Wheels Look New Step by Step : 1 Take the wheels off so you can clean and polish more areas. Then remove small parts such as center caps. 2 Wash the wheels thoroughly using a mitt, water and soap designed for cars. Dry with a chamois. 3 Get rid of grease and grime with a soft rag and crud remover or grease remover. Take your time getting to the hard-to-reach spots, using clean, new rags as the old ones get dirty. Repeat Step 2. 4 Working on a small section at a time, use a clean, soft cloth to apply a wheel polish. 5 Use a clean cloth to buff the area. Use a cotton swab or skewer wrapped in cloth to get polish out of the tiny areas. 6 Lightly spray the wheel with water, wipe dry with a soft towel, and get your sunglasses on to protect your eyes from the shine of those wheels. Tips & Warnings Don't use liquid polish that contains ammonia or acids. These can harm the aluminum. *Chapter 5: The Electrical System: Your Car's Spark of Life 1Q2 The condenser The condenser (shown in Figure 5-17) is an electrical "sponge" that keeps the points from burning up. This small metal cylinder prevents the electricity from arcing across the gap when the points are open, which would cause the points to burn. Condensers should be replaced periodically, along with the points and rotor. Chapter 12 shows you how to do so. Figure 5-17: A condenser. Other parts found only on electronic distributors Electronic distributors employ electronic parts. The good news is that they tend to be relatively trouble-free. The bad news is that if they break down, you have to pay a professional to replace them. They include the following parts: An ignition module is a transistorized component that triggers the ignition coil to fire high voltage. The module is a "non-wear" component that replaced the old-style "breaker" points in the early to mid-1970s. It is usually found in or around the distributor. 284

On some vehicles, this is a magnetic pulse generator called a pick-up coil. Other vehicles use a Hall-Effect switch or a photoelectric sensor inside the distributor to trigger the module. It probably doesn't make much difference which type your vehicle has, because there's no need for you to develop a personal relationship with it. Part II: What Makes It Go?. Other parts found only on distributorless ignition systems Distributorless ignition systems also use a solid-state ignition module, along with the following additional electronic parts (refer to Figure 5-10): t* A crankshaft sensor is a trigger device that tells the ignition module when to fire the spark plugs. V A camshaft sensor, found on some distributorless ignition systems, is a trigger device that synchronizes when the proper ignition coil should be fired. Other Electrical Gadgets The alternator also supplies the electrical current for the sound system, headlights, taillights, directional signals, defroster, heater, air conditioner, and other electrical gadgets via electrical wiring under the dashboard. They are located in a fuse box that is usually found under or near the dashboard. Your owner's manual should show you where the fuse box on your vehicle is, or you can crawl under the dashboard and trace the wires from your sound system until you reach the fuse box. See Chapter 12 for instructions on checking fuses and replacing a burnt-out fuse. Windshield wipers need to be checked and replaced periodically. Chapter 3 provides tips on checking and replacing your windshield wipers.and windshield washer fluid. * Directional signal flashers on your dashboard do more than tell you whether the directional signals are flashing. They also are designed to provide clues to malfunctions elsewhere on your car! Chapter 20 tells you how to decipher these clues and rectify the problems that they indicate. Volvo .
